What Oil Should I put in the Gearbox and Back Axle of my Dellow

LOC 827 has a Ford 10 engine and 3 speed box.

I put Morris straight 30 in the engine. The question is what to use for the gearbox and back axle.

Do I put EP90 in the gearbox or one of these non-EP oils you can get. I have been reading that EP oils are not good for the old bushes.

Same question for the back axle where I was planning to use 140. EP or not?

Help and advise appreciated.

Michael

  1. Mike, for what it is worth we use the following oils after speaking to the Castrol man at Swavesey near Cambridge.

    Engine Classic XL30.
    Axle and Gearbox EXP 80W-90.

Our gearbox is generally as yours but is reputed to have a lower 1st gear.

We change oils after every trial. Since we broke the diff. on the Northern Trial last year we have not had any problem with the axle although saying this is obviously inviting a problem next time!

I had considered the very heavy oils in the rear axle but decided this might be counter productive.

Hope this is of some help.

  2. Thanks Robin.

Plan is to enter LOC 827 in Class 0 on The Edinburgh so I want to get the transmission oil right. After all the years trialling my Beetle with a 4 planet diff and running Red Line synthetic gear oil it will be a new experience having to be gentle on the car!

I am confused about gear oil for old cars. Some say you shouldn't use an EP gear oil as the EP additives destroy the phosphor bronze bushes. However, I have just acquired a 1933 Ford Model Y and the Y&C register recommend EP140 in the axle and EP90 in the gearbox.

Will put Morris straight 30 in the engine. I have used this in my Beetle for more than 20 years.

As an old business friend used to say "I am still confused but at least its on a higher level".
